VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

ALL UTD STUDENTS WHO WANT TO APPLY FOR A VOLUNTEER POSITION MUST BE AN ESTABLISHED MEMBER OF MCD VOLUNTEERS CLUB

Please make sure you are able to adhere to the following expectations before you start the application process. 

  • Volunteers MUST be able to commit to at least one 4 hour shift per week for a full semester. Any volunteer who is unable to provide consistent service for more than 30 days will have their activity status changed to "INACTIVE" and will be asked to return their badge and uniform promptly. 

    • Shifts are available Mon-Fri 8am-12pm or 12pm-4pm​

      • Hospital semesters run on a different timeline than school semesters. Please check the calendar under the "For Active Volunteers" tab for start and end dates

    • Absences due to illness must be made up within 1 week of returning and a physician's note must be presented to the volunteer coordinator. 

    • ​No Call No Show (NCNS) is grounds for immediate dismissal from the program and the club.

  • All volunteers start in the CONCIERGE position (lobby areas) in order to acclimate to the hospital environment and gain experience with guest services

    • ​Responsibilities:

      • Guiding patients and guests around the hospital​​

      • Managing patient information

      • Addressing general concerns and complaints

      • Maintaining a welcoming and calm environment for guests in the lobby

  • Once you have completed training in the concierge position, you will be transferred to your choice of the following patient care areas:

    • Child Life/Pediatrics

    • Day Surgery 

    • Volunteer Ambassador: Cancer Resource Center 

  • Volunteer Dress Code

    • Hospital issued navy volunteer jacket or polo worn over volunteer's own pair of khaki colored pants (full length), white shirt, and athletic shoes. 

    • Hospital issued volunteer badge clipped to upper right lapel of shirt

    • Hospital issued fleece jacket is offered during winter months

  • Hospital Benefits 

    • Complimentary meal ($6 value) in hospital cafeteria on assigned day of duty​

    • Complimentary parking passes each day you are scheduled to volunteers

Note About References

Only the "Reference 1" section on the application needs to be filled out. For these fields, please pick someone outside of MCD Volunteers Club's Leadership Board.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOU HAVE APPLIED

  1. Acceptance email from Lynda Kirby will ask you to book an in-person onboarding appointment at Medical City Dallas.

  2. Within 24 hours of booking your appointment you will receive a confirmation email that includes further details.

  3. Appointment lasts 1 hour and takes place at Medical City Dallas Hospital 7777 Forest Lane, Building A. You will be asked to fill out some additional paperwork and get blood drawn for a TB test while you are at the hospital. Additionally you will be taking a look at the shift schedule and picking your ideal shift time.

    • Tips:

      • Enter through the A lobby and park in the A lobby parking garage so you can receive free parking.

      • BE SURE TO BRING YOUR VACCINATION RECORD WITH YOU!

  4. After your TB Test and Background Check is processed, you will receive another email from the coordinator with information about orientation. Email back to chose a date.​​

  5. After you attend orientation, you start your weekly shifts!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE

  1. Make sure you are a club member by checking "Member List and Status" sheet on the linktree.

  2. Fill out the "Application Issues Form".

  3. Wait for a response from the volunteer chair addressing your issue.
